What is BitTorrent in Plain English?

BitTorrent is a program you download. It is similar to a peer-to-peer file sharing service. Basically it goes like this: You download the installer. You get the link to a file that ends in .torrent and enter that URL into your browser (preferably Internet Explorer). This opens the BitTorrent download window. It starts downloading the file, or episode that you wanted (eg. alias2x01.torrent). As it downloads, it uploads the parts that you have to other people so many people can get it at once. When you've finished downloading the file, you can leave the window open (don't press finish or close the window) and other people can still download from you. This is very much encouraged.

Note:

If you?re client freezes during D/Ls, it?s a problem with you?re network card or modem, this happens when you connect to more peers than you?re card or modem can handle & windows shuts it down. There is a cure. Shad0ws Experimental client allows you to set how many incoming peers to allow.

How to D/L Torrent files

BitTorrent is not like other peer-to-peer applications (such as Winmx, Kazaa, Gnutella, etc.) in that it does not have its own \"universe.\" Put another way, BT lives on top of the Web, which means that all of the searching/listing of available files is done on the web. When you find a file you want to download, you click on it and the BitTorrent client program will run and ask you where to put it, and then start downloading. Or you save target as. Save the file somewhere then click on it when you?re ready to start the D/L.

It doesn't do anything it says:
Problem connecting to tracker - timeout exceeded
Problem connecting to tracker - HTTP Error 503: Connect failed
Problem connecting to tracker - [Error socket error] (10061, \" Connection refused\")
Problem connecting to tracker - (111, \'Connection refused\'

Generally just wait ... this normally means that the \'Tracker\' is maybe too busy. Leave your window open and it will try to connect every 2 minutes or so.

Note: BT dose resume downloads, just click the torrent file again when you are ready to resume the D/L and save it to same place as the original. All clients have an option for default D/L directory. I suggest setting this option.

What does PeerGuardian actually do?

PeerGuardian does two things to help P2P users. The first is the obvious one, it closes connections on certain IP addresses. The second is that it optionally logs all connections made to your computer. The reason for this is so that if you do use PeerGuardian but still get sent a legal threat, you can cross-reference the date/time of the alleged infringement with the log. This gives us a list of IPs, one of which will be the IP that's doing the busting. It's basically to help us identify which IPs are doing the busting and weren't known to PeerGuardian before. - Hope that makes sense.

Is PeerGuardian 100% Protection?

CERTAINLY NOT!!! - PeerGuardian relies on users sharing information to stay up to date. It IS contributory to protection and (I'm not trying to blow my own trumpet here!!) it seems to be the most up-to-date and open database of this nature on the internet (as far as I know). The more people who are using full-logging and report the relevant IPs when they get a C&D threat (see above paragraph), the more people we can save. ANONYMOUS P2P is the way ahead IMHO, PeerGuardian isn't 100% effective.. I've NEVER claimed that and never will and I look forward to the day that PG (not just the app, more.. the database and communication between p2p'ers on blocking IPs) becomes totally redundant. I'm just trying to help supply the next-best thing until we get to that stage.

I use PeerGuardian and have still been sent a legal threat.

What do I do?

First of all, stop sharing the file you got busted with. If you're worried, try sharing older/rarer files. If you share Bourne Identity, Terminator 3 and a load of Busta Rhymes mp3s after being busted, you'll be asking for trouble. Second thing to do, check the "full connection log" in PeerGuardian. (you did have it enabled didn't you?) - Work out the difference in timezones on the infringement warning and cross-reference it with the log. From this you should be able to identify a handful of IPs. Either post that list to the PG forums for one of our admins/moderators/members to investigate or investigate it yourself and post the p2p enemy IP to the on-line database. - There are plans to automate this whole process in the future.

More small old trick..Its old, but it still works!First, download uTorrent 1.6, or older.Then download a torrent file, and open with utorrent. When its connected to peers, then -> right click on the torrent (in utorrent), Select properties, then delete the tracker. So the torrent site tracker cant track you, so you can download anything without bad ratio.This will cost you no seeder at all to the torrent file you downloaded.

Megashares has a download limit for free users, you can only download a 250 MB file, or a list of files, size total = 250 MB.

However some users just upload a 700 MB file, which is almost impossible to download as a free user.

So here is the trick, find the link you want to download (larger than 250 MB), right click on it, and download it using a download manager (IDM, FlashGet..etc), lets say the file you're downloading is 500 MB, wait till the download reaches 250 MB and pause, and just wait till your link card is renewed and resume your download.

In detail:

1. Use a download manager such as FlashGet or you will not be able to resume.
2. Each time you download ticket expires either wait the required time until it renews or do whatever you must do on your system to renew your IP* so you can get a new ticket without waiting.
3. Pause the download when the ticket expires.
4. Go to the same download page again and enter the Captcha again to renew the ticket.
5. Take the pause off (resume) the file in your download manager and the file should continue to download.
6. Repeat steps as required until the file has completed.

*Renew your IP using CMD:
- Click on the start menu => Run => type CMD => Click Ok
- Type these, each in a new line:

Its not a fast trick... but at least you'll be able to download whatever you want from Megashares

I found another site, tested it a couple of times worked perfectly, basically you paste your Megaupload link that you want to download, and it'll start downloading immediately, the problem is, you can't download a bunch of links, just one by one.

Of course this will work with almost all download sites, renew your IP, there are two ways to do that.

- Disconnect then connect your router, that should change your IP.
- Or you can renew your IP using CMD.
- Click on the start menu => Run => type CMD => Click Ok
- Type these, each in a new line:

This is a basic tutorial on how to download and upload to/from Rapidshare.com along with some tricks and advice.

Download:
Basically to download a file from Rapidshare.com, all you have to do is click on the link, a page with a table, you have two choices, either download as a premium user or a free user:

For a premium user, you won't face any problems, just download, however for free users, you'll have to do a couple of things first.

- Click on the "Free" button:

< - You'll have to wait for the timer, timer depends on the size of the file you're downloading.

- When the time finishes counting, you'll have to enter a verification code (only for free users):

And thats about it, this way you'll download as a free users.

Download tricks:
Premium users:
All premium users don't really face any problems downloading from Rapidshare, but, sometimes we have to download several archives (RAR, ZIP...), and downloading it link by links can be really annoying.

So basically here is how to download 7 links with 3 mouse clicks:

You'll need a download manager software, it helps a lot, the one I recommend is IDM (Internet download manager), you can find it at Katz.cd.

- Find the links you want to download, highlight them all, with your mouse, right click and choose "Download with IDM":

- A window will pop up, check all links, browse the location you want to download the files to, and click on "Ok":

This way you'll be able to download a large set of Rapidshare.com links, but in this case, a default option in IDM is to download 4 files at a time, some people like to download it one by one, which is doable in IDM.

If you want to change the download queue list settings, open IDM and click on "Scheduler" in the navigation bar:

A window will pop up, click on "Files in queue" tab, and change the setting to "1", then click "Apply":

This way the queued files will be downloaded one by one.

Free users:
There is one thing that concerns free users, is the time / file limit, there is one basic trick to avoid and bypass that time, disconnect then connect your router, this should change your IP, clear your browser's cookies and cache, then you'll be able to download from Rapidshare again.

Or you can renew your IP using CMD.

- Click on the start menu => Run => type CMD => Click Ok
- Type these, each in a new line:

- Clear your cookies / cache, and thats it.

This does not always work though.


Upload:
If you want to upload files to Rapidshare.com, all you have to do is go to Rapidshare.com (Login if you're a premium member), and browse for the file you want to upload, and click on the "Upload button".


If you have more than one file you want to upload, and use an upload queue list, Rapidshare has a wonderful tool for that, its called "Rapid Uploader", you can get it here:

Information for Uploaders:
If you upload files frequently, you can create a "Collectors Account" in Rapidshare.com, every file larger than 1 MB from your upload gets downloaded, you'll earn points.

When you collect 10,000 points, you can convert these points to a 30 days premium account.

If you want to create a collectors account, just go to Rapidshare.com, upload any file, after the file is uploaded, you'll be asked if you want to sign up, just sign up and start collection points.
